This project completely transformed an existing Canberra home to create a better long-term home for a growing family of six — soon to become seven.
Rather than simply adding more space, the renovation rethought how the entire house worked. We constructed a new two-storey extension and effectively flipped the home’s original layout, relocating the main living areas downstairs and creating the family’s bedroom spaces upstairs.
The transformation included a new kitchen, three bathrooms and a new laundry, along with new flooring throughout the home. We also renovated the existing lounge room and staircase, tying the original areas of the house into the new extension and updated layout.
With a large family and another arrival on the way, the focus wasn’t just on creating a bigger house. It was about making the existing home work better — providing practical family living spaces downstairs, separation and privacy upstairs, and enough bathrooms, storage and utility space to make everyday life easier. The result is a substantially larger and completely remodelled family home that retains the original house while changing almost everything about how the family lives within it.For Build It Bro, Kingsford Smith Drive is a great example of what a well-considered renovation and extension can achieve. Sometimes the answer isn’t to move house — it’s to take the home and location a family already loves and reshape it around the way they actually want to live.
